Jamaica Kincaid has a book of short stories called, "At the Bottom of the River." Susan Sontag calls her an "unaffectedly sumptuous, irresistible writer" I have to agree, that her prose are "thrilling" especially her language. Listening to her being interviewed, Jamaica Kincaid said she is always using everyday, people, places and things and asking, "How can I write this?"
Newly Found...Freedom
In the washroom of Hamilton's Public Library there are two girls about 12, 13 or 14.
One is applying eyeliner to the others.
"Remember I wear glasses."
" I know that, but if you don't do it twice, it wont show as much."
the other girl flinches as her friend presses hard as she underlines the other eye.
Then casually they began speaking Swahili, and as she looks at what her friend has done in the mirror, she pushes her pony tail from the back, her hand flat. to lift it up in front.
Flat, and pressed down was the jet black hair, flat from the wearing of the Hijab. Now she can choose and she decided to stop wearing it. This is her newly found...freedom.
She can choose, and she decided not to wear her hijab today.
